Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Kingston upon Hull Corporation Transport Department has placed an order with Bell Punch Co Ltd for a further 100 bus sets of Autofare equipment. Already, in pre-production form, this system is operating with success on vehicles working the busiest routes in the city.

The system aims to combine the speed and simplicity of the conventional farebox, while retaining the control and security of conventional ticket issue and inspection.

A passenger is faced with a coin acceptance unit affixed to the outside of the driver's cab on the platform. Inserted coins are automatically separated and held in a viewing window so that the driver may check the total value and press the appropriate fare button on his keyboard. This action simultaneously releases the coins into a sealed vault beneath the viewing window and ejects the ticket from a separate unit to the right of the passenger.

The location of the ticket-issuing unit encourages passengers to move to their right and leave the driver immediately clear to deal with the next person.

To maintain "two-stream" boarding at peak times, an Autosiot Mk.5 coin operated ticket issuing machine is installed on the right-hand side of the entry; this type of machine accepts exact fares in any combination of 3d and 6d coins. In practice, regular passengers can be seen to board through the right hand entry with 6d and 3d coins already to serve themselves through the Autoslot.

Mr W. K. Haigh, general manager, intends to convert all vehicles to the Autofare system during the next three years.

After the fare coins are inserted and the driver has checked them, ticket issuing is a matter of pressing the appropriate button on the fare unit seen here mounted on-the dashboard of the vehicle.
