• It was largely a family affair last Sunday at Fowey, where the third St Austell LDoY eliminating round was held. Not only did two brothers win classes C and D, but one of them W. J. Mennear, was also overall champion. And 14 places out of 24 in the classes were taken by drivers employed by Heavy Transport Co (ECC) Ltd and, of these, five were class winners. Then, as if that were not enough, the firm's drivers went on to clean up the team prize too.

BRS must be feeling quite pleased themselves, for in this, the first St Austell competition they have entered, one of their men, J. Govier, driving an AEC Mandator artic, walked off with class G with a onepoint lead over last year's class G winner, J. Grose of Heavy Transport.

One of the most interesting aspects of the contest was that five drivers; J. Coad. M. Golley, -W:J. Mennear, J. Govier and M. Johns, tied for a trophy presented for the best road-route results with nil penalties. The judges decided to utilize the Highway Code

as a decider but again the five tied with nil.

The organizer of this round, Mr J. Newman, remembering how the lack of adequate briefing of marshals nearly upset last year's round, this year held two briefings, with excellent results. The competition ran smoothly and very quickly with 48 vehicles completing the contest by 1 p.m. With only 20 entries to be tested after lunch, the contest was completed, score sheets compiled and posted and the prizegiving and speeches all over by 4.30 p.m.—one of the most snagfree exercises apart from Ted Teer's London Round that I've seen, The entry, 16 up on the last year's figure of 52, was made up with a 40 per cent quota from Heavy Transport; so, with a quota of some 60 per cent of the places and a further 60 per cent of the class winners, the drivers justified the trust put in them First and second places in class A were decided—after a tie with 85 points—between A. Masters (Heavy Transport) and E.C. Holman (PO Plymouth)—by resorting to the Highway Code points.
