• Many road transport employers face a considerable delay in the payment of grants from the Road Transport Industry Training Board for training carried out between August 1 and December 31 1969. This is because more than 85 per cent of the claims were lodged in the last four weeks of the acceptance period—January 1 to March 31, 1970.

The volume of claims lodged built up steadily towards the closing date and late claimers, the Board warns, "will almost inevitably have to wait for their money." Practically everyone who claimed before the end of February, the Board added, has received payment already.

Mr James Carlin, administration director of the RTITB, said this week: "The Board's staff is geared to a fairly even flow on grant work—for obvious economic reasons. When the industry deluges us with claims in a brief period there is bound to be a delay in checking and clearing them. We expect to be paying more than iSim for training carried out in the last five months of 1969. The staff will, of course, do everything possible to speed up the process but we cannot short-circuit the checking procedures—after all, it's money belonging to the industry which we are handling."
