REDUCTION of Excise duty on buses will save the North Western. Road Car Co., Ltd. an estimated £26,485 a year. As a result, the company intend to reduce some fares by amounts varying from lel. to 4d. These are fares now above the appropriate rate per mile.

Other fares, h o we ye r, may be increased. The company say that while details of the proposed reductions are being drawn up the North Western Traffic Commissioners have reserved their decision on a limited application for fare increases. These are needed to raise £40,000 of the £60,000 a year which higher wages have added to running costs.

If the application is granted, single fares of 6d. and above will be increased by 1d. Return fares up to and including 2s. will go up by Id., and return fares over 2s. by 2d.

Hansons Buses, Ltd., Huddersfield, have applied to the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners for an increase in fares on 15 local routes. If the application is granted, fares up to and including 4d. will be increased by fd. and fares exceeding 4d. increased by Id.

NON-PAYING ROUTES: INQUIRY WANTED

A COMMITTEE should be appointed .1-1 to examine the problem of uneconomic country bus routes. This suggestion has been made in a letter to the Chancellor of the Exchequer by Mr. Rupert Speir (Cons., Hexham).

Mr. Speir considers that the Excise duty cuts in the Budget will afford negligible relief.

Better results could be achieved, he states, by 'concentrating assistance upon those operators who can prove that they need it. He suggests that the Finance Bill should provide for the remission of fuel tax to those, operators whose routes do not pay.

NEW COACH PARK OPENED

CONDTTIONS for -coach passengers at Knutsford, Cheshire, are considerably improved with the opening last week of the £15,000 coach park, which will accommodate 30 vehicles.

Apart from being a popular destination for local coach tours, Knutsford is an intermediate stopping point for many through routes. A considerable amount of street parking has, at times, caused inconvenience to passengers.

BULK HANDLING FOR FARMS

BULK handling of grain and foodstuffs Li was demonstrated last week by Robert Hutchinson and Co., Ltd., millers, Kirkcaldy, when they showed local farmers the Bulkmobile system in action.

The demonstration was made by a 6-ton tipper divided into three compartments. Present indications are that there would be a saving of 15s. per ton on consignments, plus 5s. per ton on sacks, supplemented by labour economies.
