• Many buyers turn to the Continent for better deals on trucks as well as cars, but they can encounter difficulty. Sean Clark of M1 Commercials is one: after importing 70 or so Oaf 45s from Holland last year, he thought he would go back for more.

Now he says his order for 44 more trucks is being delayed and subjected to price increases. He feels these price increases might encourage dealers not to sell for export back to the UK.

Rene Dorman, Clark's contact on the Continent, says: "There was no problem until two months ago. Now the people at Oaf say there are to be no trucks from Europe to England. They say you cannot buy right-hand-drive trucks from us."

But the managing director of Daf Netherlands, Ron Bonsen, denies the allegations, describing them as "baloney" and "nonsense".

He says Dorman, now an tveco dealer, was given a price through the Dutch Oaf dealer network based on Dutch list prices: "IF he wants to make an uproar on pricing, then let him. I'm not in the business of giving things away. He wants an answer I cannot give him. If he doesn't like the price we have given him, then let him sell lvecos."

Other dealers also deny the allegations, including one in Amsterdam, who said he had received no instructions on trucks for export to the UK: '1 can't imagine they would be so stupid," he concludes.
