• The urgent need for further research into wheel loss was tragically underlined last week when a motorised crane lost a wheel on the A15 in East London, killing a motorist and narrowly missing other vehicles. Funds are mounting in Commercial Motor's Wheel Loss Campaign — but such fresh reminders of the danger and unpredictability of wheel loss incidents means the industry cannot afford to sit back and hope others will take the responsibility for much-needed research.

Russell Lewis of ancillary trailer equipment manufacturer

Vernon Developments, contacted CM in response to Newmans, of Erith, experiences with nearside nuts working loose (CM 15-21 February). He points out when the 7/8" BSF fitting was standard, right-hand threads were used on the offside and left-hand threads on the nearside.

If you would like to donate to the CM campaign, please send cheques to Commercial Motor, Room 403, Quadrant House, The Quadrant, Sutton, Surrey SM2 5AS.
