INDUSTRIAL accidents during maintenance work are on the increase. In the latest two-year period monitored by the Health and Safety Executive there were 10,000 major injuries and 326 deaths.

But 83 per cent of the deaths could have been avoided if practical precautions had been taken. Because failure to provide proper physical safeguards is a major cause the British Safety Council is now marketing a safety clasp that restricts access to machinery that should not be used or to nogo areas in a factory or workshop.

This "Lock-Off" clasp has two sets of jaws so that it can be used in a variety of situations. It allows up to six maintenance men to affix their own padlocks and so prevent their colleagues from using machinery.

The Lock-Off clasp costs £11.85 for a set of three. Further details from British Safety Council Sales, telephone 01-741 1231.
