THE NUMBERS of containers moving between Britain and foreign trade areas in 1984 increased substantially with the exceptions of South Africa, Australasia and Scandinavia/Baltic, according to a survey from London-based Transmodal industries Research.

However, the proportion of imports and exports carried in boxes fell slightly.

Container traffic with the Indian Ocean increased by 22.4 per cent. Mediterranean 12.1 pc, North American close to 12 pc at 2.84 million tonnes, and North American almost eight per cent to 4.1 million tonnes.
