Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Following a serious accident in Japan two years ago when a bus belonging to the Nishitetu Bus Co. was hit at a level crossing at Omuta, and five people died, the company has run an intensive safe driving campaign. As part of this campaign the company has commissioned a research by Prof. Nagasue of Kurume Medical College, in association with the Japan Traffic Science Association, to study the driving technique and the mentality of accident-prone drivers.

Methods have also been developed to select driver applicants and to correct present drivers who show above-average accident rates.

A bus has been fully instrumented with electronic systems to record the electroencephalogram (EEG or brain activity), electro-cardiogram (ECG or heart action),

eye' movement and respiratory pattern of the driver, together with a simultaneous record of the speed, acceleration and use of the brake and accelerator. Twelve channels of data in all are recorded on a paper chart.

In addition, a close-circuit television system with videotape recorder is fitted, to record the driver's view and this can be played back synchronized with the 12channel paper chart recording, for analysis.

The vehicle was equipped by San'ei Instrument Co. Ltd., Tokyo, who are represented in the United Kingdom by Instrumentarium Ltd., 28 Manchester Street, London Wl.
