Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I NCREASES in wages varying from 3s. to 16s. a week were agreed on Monday by the Road Haulage Wages Council. They now have to be ratified by the Minister of Labour.

Changes have also been made in the wages categories. The present five classes of driver of vehicles of a ton or less carrying capacity are to be replaced by three-under 19 years, 19-20 years, and 21 years and over. The existing four categories-over 5 tons and up to 8 tons, over 8 tons and up to 12 tons, over 12 tons and up to 15 tons, and over 15 tons and up to 18 tons-are to be replaced by three-over 5 tons and up to 10 tons. over 10 tons and up to 15 tons, and over 15 tons and up to 18 tons.

The extra shilling paid in London to some drivers who have remained with the same employer since June 8, 1932, is to be withdrawn.

The following are the proposed wage rates in the London area, with the existing rates in parentheses: Drivers of vehicles other than steam wagons Or tractors: 1 ton or less carrying capacity, under 19 years, 110s. (82s. 9d. and 98s. 3d.); 19-20 years, 133s. (I09s. 6d. and 121s. 6d.); 21 years and over, 163s. (I52s.). All ages, over I ton and up to 5 tons. 163s. (155s.); over 5 tons and up to 10 tons, 170s.; over .10 tons and up to 15 tons. 1.76s.; over 15 tons and up to 18 tons, 183s. (171$.); over 18 tons, 192s.(176s.).

Tractor Drivers 'Drivers of steam wagons or tractors, other than tractors not exceeding 2 tons unladen used exclusively for furniture removal, up to 8 tons vehicle capacity. 170s. (I59s.); over 8 tolls and up to 12 tons, 176s. (163s.); over 12 tons, 183s. (167s.).

Mates of steam wagons. 158s. (1515.).

Drivers of tractors not exceeding 2 tons unladen used exclusively for furniture removals, 163s. (155s.).

Adult workers in furniture warehousing and removing; foremen, 162s. (I54s.); removal packers, 156s. (149s.); porters, 154s. (147s).

Statutory attendants under 19 years of age, 94s. 3d. (89s.).

Other road haulage workers, 21 years or over, 156s. (149s.); 20 years, 122s. (116s. 9d.); 19 years, 110s. (104s. 9d.); 18 years, 100s. (95s. 6d.); 17 years, 745.6d. (71s. 6d.); 16 years, 68s. 3d. (65s. 3d.); under 16 years, 62s. (59s.).

Grade 1 and 2 Wages To calculate grade 1 wages for drivers under the age of 21 in charge of vehicles of 1 ton or less carrying capacity, 2s. should be subtracted from the London rates. The grade 2 rate is obtained by deducting 4s.

The grade 1 rate for adult drivers of vehicles of 1 ton or less is 5s. lower than the London scale, and in the case of grade 2 is 9s. less. There is a difference of 5s. between the London and grade 1 scales for drivers of vehicles over 1 ton arid a difference of 9s. in the case of grade 2.

The 5s. and 9s. deductions apply also to drivers of tractors not exceeding ,s28 2 tons unladen used exclusively for furniture removals.

In grade 1 areas removal foremen are paid 4s. 6d. less than the London rate (6s. 6d. in grade 2), removal packers receive 2s. 64. less (4s. 6d. grade 2) and porters 2s. 6d. less (5s. grade 2).

Statutory attendants under 18 years get 2s. 9d, less in grade 1 areas and 5s. 3d. less in grade 2.

Workers on vehicles used to move loads, other than live or dead cattle, which by reason of indivisibility require mechanical loading or unloading equipment to be carried and -operated on the responsibility of the driver, are dealt with as follows:

Drivers, London area, over 6 tons and up to 10 tons capacity, new rate 176s. (old rate I67s.); over 10 tons and up to 16 tons, 184s. (174s.). Mates, 156s. (149s.). Drivers in grades 1 and 2 areas receive 4t. less and mates, 3s. less.

Special Types Drivers of special-tyPe vehicles over 16 tons and up to 20 tons are to receive 196s. a week (180s.) and mates 158s. (151s.); over 20 tons and up to 25 tons, 201s. (t85s) and mates, 163s. (155s.); over 25 tons and up to 45 tons, 206s. (190s.) and mates, 163s. (155s.); over 45 tons, 231 s. (215s.) and mates, 163s. (155s.).

In grade 1 and 2 areas drivers receive 4s. a week less, and mates, 3s. Heavy brakesmen and steersmen in the London area are to be paid J76s. (I65s.) and in grade 1 and 2 areas. 173s, (162s.).

B'ritish Road Services told The Commercial Motor on Tuesday that no date had been fixed for a further meeting with the unions to consider a wage claim submitted to them. A meeting between the two sides took place last week.

BODYBUILDERS' PAY DISPUTE FOR ARBITRATION

THE dispute over higher pay for workers in the vehicle-building industry has been referred by the unions to the Industrial Disputes Tribunal.
