• Stagecoach subsidiary Ribble Motor Services has bought troubled Barrow Borough Transport, which has been run by accountants Price Waterhouse since the end of last year when it was placed in administration with debts of nearly £1 million.
BBT's new owner is now part of the rapidly expanding Stagecoach empire: it is thought that the deal could attract attention from the Office of Fair Trading, which is already investigating Stagecoach's takeover of Ribble (CM 26 April-3 May).
Stagecoach now runs Ribble, BBT and the Bee Line Buzz Company of Manchester in the North-west alone, and accepts that OFT investigations is a possibility. However, Stagecoach managing director Brian Souter says: "We are delighted that at last the uncertainty of bus operations in Barrow are over."
