Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

FOR CUSTOMS

• The Freight Transport Association has launched customs consultancy service to advise members how to avoid border pitfalls.

The service is designed to minimise customs compliance costs, reduce duty payments and make the best use of simplified procedures and preferential arrangements.

For details contact the FTA consultancy co-ordinator David Mitchell, phone (0892) 26171. • The Vehicle Builders & Repairers Association has worked with Jenbro workwear to produce a range of workwear to replace the traditional cotton overall.

Flamemaster is a cotton/ polyester fabric with a flame retardant finish, which the VBRA says overcomes the problem of excessive shrinkage and poor durability of chemically treated cotton boilersuits. It is also claimed to have an advantage over untreated polyester garments which can burn when exposed to welding sparks.

The suits have been used for some time in the off-shore oil and gas industries. They retail for £24.75 (flame retardant boilersuit); 215.50 (polyester/ cotton boilersuit); and 212.55 (polyester/cotton men's coat). For details contact Robert Hadfield at the VBRA, phone (0532) 538333.

RUNNING THE RELAY RACE

• Lucas has launched a new range of relays, offering 27 units including nine traditional cannister relays, three heavyduty relays, one micro relay and 14 new minicube relays.

The range is designed to meet the fast expanding market for relays caused by major developments in vehicle electrical systems, says Lucas. All the units have an optional push-in bracket and are clearly marked with switching circuit diagrams, including information on voltage and continuous current rating.

DEALING WITH EMERGENCY SPILLS

• PIG (UK) has introduced the "Spilstopper," an elastomer mat which can be placed over manholes, grates or vents to seal them from the flow of wa ter, petroleum products and most caustics.

PIG says that at 13kg, the Spilstopper is heavy enough to form a complete seal, but light enough to be handled by one man. It costs 2259. For more details ring Mark Woodall on 01-871 3088.

EUREKA FOR TAGGING • Eureka has launched a new tag encoder for materials handling and the transport industry. The unit allows users of the 311 tag system to programme in their own codes and replace existing ones (something that had to be handled by Eureka). The desk-top encoder is mains powered and works with most IBM compatible computers.

Contact Eureka Systems Division, Wallisdown Road, Poole, Dorset BH12 5AG, phone (0202) 537000.

FLEET CONTROL • Dowty Information Systems has launched a software package for fleet management in the distribution, freight forwarding and service industries.

The Fleet Despatch Management Systems (FDMS) can be used in a variety of computers, from a 286-based PC up to a DEC VAX or similar.

FDMS can queue jobs in order of priority, check customer account details, log new jobs, display driver and vehicle histories, and send information to the driver on the road via private mobile radio, Band III or cellular phone.

For more details contact Sue Burge or Rebecca Carter on (0225) 891881.

THE HEAT IS ON • Webasto has brought out a new version of its EIL18 dieselfired cab heater. Thermobox is pre-installed in a box behind the cab, allowing quicker installation and added security for the driver. For more details call Webasto on (0202) 715771.
