Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A patent for a system of automatic fare collection which will make it "almost impossible" to bilk bus operators was given a new lease of life in the High Court last week.

Mr Justice Whitford granted a 10-year extension — the maximum allowed by law — of a patent taken out in 1957 by two British inventors, Mr John Wolfgang Halpern and Mr William Ward.

Their original patent expired last month and they sought to extend it to allow more time for the invention to be taken up.
