A N alleged lack of holiday facilities Pl.-resulted in a series of applications being made by three north-western operators, at Manchester, last week. R. Wood and Sons (Tours), Ltd., sought to add seven new excursions, extend the period of operation of their Blackpool tour to Easter, Whitsuntide, Ashton Holiday Fortnight and Christmas and also to link their North Wales destinations. It was proposed that the new excursions should be operated from 75 Wellington Road, Ashton-under-Lyne.

Multiple Objections ,

This application was opposed by the British Transport Commission; A. Mayne and Son, Ltd.; Messrs. E. N. Shipley and Sons; Yelloway Motor Services, Ltd.; Creams (Lanes), Ltd.; Ribble Motor Services, Ltd.; W. C. Standerwick, Ltd.; Lancashire United Transport, Ltd., and the North Western Road Car Co., Ltd.

A. Mayne and Son, Ltd., Clayton, wished to link all the destinations on six of their licences, add a series of additional excursions, including Christmas operation to Blackpool, add 30 extra vehicle journeys during the Blackpool Illuminations period and to increase their vehicle allowance. They were opposed by the B.T.C., Ribble, North Western and L.U.T.

Mr. E. N. Shipley, Ashton-under-Lyne. sought to link his Mossley and Ashton licences, increase his vehicle allowance and introduce a series of new excursions. These were opposed by thc B.T.C., North Western, W. C.. Standerwick, Ribble, Lancashire United Transport, R. Wood and Yelloway.

Two travel agents gave evidence in respect of the Mayne application and

stated that there had been many inquiries from people who wished to go' to Blackpool at Christmas. Mr. B. Healing, a director of. R. Wood, said that they always linked in the past and had done it in good faith. It enabled them to carry economic loads. They had often been involved in route diversions. Mr.: F. .D. Walker, objecting for Ribble, observed that if this were the case, the

operational figures looked extremely satisfactory.

Mr. E. N. Shipley submitted several letters from customers who complained about inadequate facilities. He wanted to remedy this and in addition provide a wider programme. There were very few services to the Lancashire coast from Mossley, Uppermill and Greenfield. Two members of the Mossley Urban District Council said that many 'inhabitants had been unable to get on the Shipley vehicles, and had to travel into Ashton or Manchester to join excursions.

Entitled to Provide Transport Mr. P. Kershaw, for wood's, asked Mr. Shipley why, as he wanted to operate to Blackpool at Christmasand Morecambe during the local September holidays, he was against Mr. Wood doing the same thing. "In reply he said that he was entitled to provide transport in the area if there was a demand.

Mr. Walker said that figures should have been produced in respect of the Mossley and Ashton licences. Then it coitld be decided whether two half-loads -could be linked to make one fully loaded vehicle.

The case is to be continued.
