TRAFFIC congestion would cause a I substantial decline in the number of passengers carried during the next financial year; said Mr. J. Mackie, general manager, Belfast Transport Department, in his report for the year ended March 31.

The serVices, operated jointly by the corporation and the company, showed total receipts of inure than £620.000 for the period March 1-May 31, against £586,000 for the same period last year.

While receipts were £34,000 up, total expenditure was £1,000 less than last year, at £572,000. 'Estimated credit balance for the three months, before deduction of income tax, was £48,000, compared with • 113,000 last year. This figure was shared equally by the two undertakings.

INCREASES UNDERMINE PROFIT

I NCREASED wage payments were mainly responsible for turning the £13,200 profit of West Hartlepool Transport Department, in 1959-60, into an estimated profit of only £500, for 1960-61. Aid. T. Andrews, chairman of the transport committee, who disclosed this, last week, said that an increase in fares could not be ruled out after the committee had considered the new situation.

The estimated profit for the current year did not take into account expenditure of £19,000 on four new buses which would be met from the reserve fund, which stood at £24,000 at the start of the current year.
