Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

QHOULD the salaries of supervisory and clerical employees of British Road Services be related to those of . other sections of the British Transport Commission, or to those in the road haulage industry?

A dispute on this question has arisen between the Transport and General Workers Union and B.R.S. According to Mr. C. E. Akroyd, writing in the July issue of the Transport and General Workers' Record, B.R.S. maintain that` salaries must be considered in the light of those paid by competitors in the road haulage industry and should not be linked. with those ' in -'other sections Of the' Commission. The Union will mot accept this argument. • .

Mr. Akroyd says that, because of their B.R.S. Mast -set the standard of wages_ and salaries throughout ' the industry,' instead of being influenced by their competitors. Moreover, if the employers' contention were accepted, it would be extended to manual grades as well as office staffs. The Union have also not given up hope that road haulage will be renationalized.

B.R.S. agreed to increase salaries by 5 per cent, retrospective to February 29, but the Union demanded that the concession should be back-dated to January 11, and the matter has been referred back for further negotiation.
