NO more eeonomies could be effected if efficient services were to be maintained.. The Company was now reaching the limit in this sphere, Mr. T. Robert Williams, chairman, North Western Road Car Co., Ltd., told shareholders, at Stockport, on Wednesday.
During the past year nearly half the services of the company and about one. third of the total mileage covered were operated below cost. Wage increases would cost an additional £170,000 a year, equivalent to nearly 11 per cent. of existing wage costs, said Mr. Williams. This left no alternative but to applyfor fare increases, he said.
The downward trend of passengers had been halted, but this was no doubt due to attractive weather last year. It would be imprudent to base future prospects on such favourable conditions. Satisfying results had accrued from the acquisition, early in 1958, of Altrincham Coachways, Ltd., Edwards Tours, Ltd., and Melba Motors, Ltd., said Mr. Williams.
NEW DAIMLERS FOR EARLS COURT SHOW
A N official statement issued last Friday, by Transport Vehicles (Daimler),
Ltd., revealed that development work on a new range of bus chassis will not be affected by the recent acquisition of the company by Jaguar Cars, Ltd. The new range is to be exhibited at the Commercial Motor Show at Earls Court in September, and is expected to contain several unusual design features.
The statement made it clear .that. all
bus chassis production would continue without interruption. Promised deliveries of new and existing orders would be' maintained. 'Spares and maintenance arrangements are to continue as before from depots in Coventry and London and other facilities in Edinburgh and Manchester.
TUNNEL INAUGURATED
CONSTRUCTION of the new Black\-wall Tunnel was inaugurated by the Minister of Transport on Monday. The new tunnel, approximately 250 yards downstream from and roughly parallel to the existing tunnel, will 'accommodate a two-lane carriageway. It is expected to be completed in 42 months and the cost for . the whole scheme, including approaches, will be nearly £9m.
