Piaggio's forward-control petrol-powered Porter is, in many way, lust what you need if you do a lot of city centre delivery work.
Its highly manoeuvrable and easy to park-thanks to its compact dimensions. It will also shift upwards of half a tonne. Plus, you'll be winning plenty of environmental plaudits if you opt for the electric version.
It is worth noting this little load lugger is also marketed as a pick-up -two different body sizes are available -a tipper and as a chassis cab. Additionally, it is produced as a 4x4. Entry-level Truk is soon to join the line-up Unfortunately, it also has a number of drawbacks. The cab interior is basic, the ride and handling leave a lot to be desired and, despite the manufacturer's assurances concerning driver and passenger safety, other vehicles are likely to offer greater frontal impact protection. The Piaggio Porter has one crucial advantage over many of its rivals in today's current economic climate, though: it is cheap as chips. It is a big shame that there's no diesel lump, until mid-2009 at least.
