Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• United Automobile Services Ltd has refused to extend its time limit while Northumberland local authorities decide whether to subsidize unprofitable bus services, or allow the services to be discontinued. Northumberland County Council, in association with a number of district councils, had asked for further time to consider the firm's claim for 145.000 to retain nearly 20 services now working at a loss. In the meantime, the county council's officials have had access to the bus company's books. The services are due to be withdrawn at the end of the month. • The Economic Bus Co Ltd, Whitburn, Co Durham, has denied rumours that the company may be sold—in fact, it says, no take-over approaches have been made.

• During the recent ban on overtime by employees of private bus companies, 310 busmen left the employment of the Northern General Transport Co Ltd, Gateshead, and associated firms. However, Mr K. Holmes, Northern's assistant general manager, claims that services are more or less back to normal as many employees are working overtime.
