Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

FREIGHTPOINT, the distribution service launched by British Rail subsidiary Freightliner in April last year, has since recorded several customer success stories.

While it is still in its infancy with around 1.5 per cent of Freightliner turnover, it is consolidating its position this year, set to double this figure next year, and looking for eight per cent in 1986, announced managing director Bryan Driver on Monday.

Notable customers are Chloride Exide; BP Detergents; Billington, importer and distributor of specialised sugars; and Kelman, wines and spirits distributor.

These companies have different transport needs, which include the requirement for substantial investment in curtain-sided containers for the Kelman Freightpoint service, and specialised equipment like foldaway forklift trucks (carried on the rear of curtain-sided trailers) for the unloading and delivery of Exide batteries.

The Freightpoint service is designed to reduce costs by offering a planned package involving all or some of the elements of distribution, trunking, warehousing and storage, inventory control, order picking, materials handling and administration, while providing a quality service.

Freightpoint regards itself as a positive response to the Government's privatisation programme linking public sector Freightliner with private distribution companies, together providing a service capable of delivering precisely what the customers want.

Freightpoint offers a road or rail distribution service or a mixture of both.

It operates through the company's 25-depot network and has links with the Continent. It is backed by Britain's largest nationalised road haulage fleet and has strategically located warehousing.

"The starting point of the Freightpoint service is the thinking that goes into it," says the company.
