THE days of romance must surely be dead. Not long ago young men were being tattooed with pierced hearts and protestations of undying devotion to their loved ones. And SA stood for sex appeal, and not for Seddon Atkinson.
But the nadir of erotic expression has now been reached by Nicholas Poole — known to his friends as Joe Ninety — who has had the Seddon Atkinson snail symbol tatooed on his left arm.
Perhaps he thinks escargots in butter are one thing but escargots in flagrante delicto are quite another. An alternative reason may be that he has an artificial leg and his employers, Devon Freightlines, have had the clutch of a Seddon Atkinson 400 tractor modified for hand operation by him. He may thus be unique among British lorry drivers.
Nicholas's soubriquet must also be unique. I know Ninety-nine Plonk is the name of a centipede with a wooden leg but Joe Ninety. „
