COMMUNITY driving licences will not be made available for either lorry or bus drivers — but the question of licences for both classes is to be discussed further.

This was the result of discussions at the meeting of EEC transport ministers in Brussels last week.

But for car drivers the community licences will be introduced in a standard form from January 1, 1982.

UK Transport minister William Rodgers fought moves to have common licences for commercial vehicle drivers and spokesmen made it clear that there would be no decision on the subject at the meeting.

Now the matter has been referred to the council's Committee of Permanent Representatives for further talks.

It was thought that a move towards standard licences throughout the community would lead to greater road safety and higher standards for the issue and withdraw] of licences.. Council president Ku Gscheidle said that Britain h proved to be the stumblin block on licences because the range of licences availab in the UK.
