Fewer Persons Killed in Street Accidents.

Collated statistics prepared by the National "Safety First" Association, following the receipt of special returns of street accidents from chief constables in different parts of the country, reveal the fact that there was a 10 per cent. reduction in the number of fatalities during the first nine months of the present year, as compared with 1930, although there was a small increase in non-fatal accidents. Last year the number of persons killed in street accidents totalled 7,305 —an average of 20 a day. In each of the past 10 years the number has exceeded that for the preceding 12 months. The outstanding feature of the latest returns is that there were 393 fewer deaths recorded than in the first nine months of 1930, the total for this year being 3,280, as against 3,673 for the 'previous year. In the same period the

number of non-fatal accidents rose from 95,995 to 102,187. This rise is probably due to the fact that the terms of the Road Traffic Act provide that all street accidents must be reported to the police.

The figures are based on returns received from 200 districts, so that the results, although not official, may be taken as being representative.
