Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Axle and suspension manufacturer Hendrickson has confirmed it is to stop making drum-braked trailer axles once current stocks are exhausted.

Responding to reports of uncertainty over the company's future activities (CM 25-31 July), John Kelleher, business strategy director, has provided CM with a written statement saying Hendrickson is 'refocusing' to concentrate on supporting the supply of truck axles and suspension to major European OEMs.

Over the past several years the OEM market for our drum-braked trailer axles has declined due to the rapid transition to disc brakes,' says Kelleher. Production of drum-braked axles has dropped over this period from 60-80 axles a day to just four or five, he says.

Kelleher adds that while the company is phasing out its stocks of drum-braked axles, it will continue to supply components in the afterrnarket and support existing customers. He also says the firm's joint venture with DaimlerChrysler to produce the Discos disc-braked axle is unaffected.
