Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Cheshire-based Boughey Distribution came to the rescue of two clients when South Yorkshire transport company JDF Logistics collapsed last year. MD Keith Forater says: "We knew there was an issue when a customer came and alerted us that there may be a problem. However, it was only speculation until the receiver rang the next day trying to sell the business. Clients quickly asked us to help with orders."

Boughey, which specialises in the grocery market, had some space available for suitable goods. "We put on some extra shunting and had to take the stuff as quickly as JDF could transfer it. It doesn't take long to assess a contract and provide a customer rates but then you really don't have long in this [type of] situation. Three customers came over to us in the end."

This was an unusual position for Boughey, because the ambient grocery market has been almost recession-proof, so it has not had the experience of seeing rivals fail.

The next challenge was resources. "We tried to bring in more people to process the work, and we have since rented third-party warehousing near one of our existing sites for those customers," reveals Forster. "There just happened to be sufficient space available, which we could utilise.

"We needed more equipment and trucks, so we rented some in the run-up to Christmas and now just have some extra in the schedule.

"The biggest challenge is getting to gri with new products. There's the odd new delivery drop, but the major issue is that when stuff has been moved out in a hurry lots of data gets confused, so it takes tin to sort the inventory out. Your warehouse operators have to be very careful about what they receive and put it all in order."

Multiple Marketing and 3V Natural Fool were clients of JDF; Boughey had all its outstanding pallets dispatched in a weep Boughey employs approximately 600 people and distributes 100,000 pallEi a month.
