Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ADEVELOPMENT which should permit more compact arrangement of belt drives to engine auxiliaries has been announced by Ferodo, Ltd., Chapel-en-le-Frith. It is Poly-V belting -which, compared with conventional belts, provides greater torque capacity from a given belt width.

The new belt is ribbed longitudinally and runs on pulleys grooved to mate with it. Because of the grooving, Poly-V gives a much greater contact area between thc belt and the pulley than conventional types. It will transmit the Same power as normal singleand multidrive ' arrangements using narrower and smaller pulleys at closer centres.

Three rib widths are being manufactured, type 1,• type I. and type M, which are

-Ain., 716 in. and in. wide respectively. Width ofthe belt can be any multiple up to 16 of these three rib dimensions.

The belting is made from synthetic rubber on hightenacity synthetic cord. As the base rubber is softer than that employed normally for V-belt construction, the belting assumes a very close fit -with the pulley grooves.
