BECAUSE of the acute shortage of bus drivers in Newport, Mon., the Transport and General Workers' Union have agreed that the transport department can engage a number of drivers who have not previously had experience as conductors.

A spokesman for the undertaking said that they were at present about 40 drivers below the minimum strength required to maintain ordinary services. Services in the town were being disorganized as a result, and last week buses had to hetaken off four main services.

Consent had been given for a new service to the new housing estate at Ringland, but the department could not operate it because of the staff shortage.

IN an effort to ease traffic congestion in I the town eight of the largest engineering companies in Derby, employing over 15,000 people, introduced a staggeredhours working week on Monday. Factories will now finish work at various times between 4.30 p.m. and 5.30 p.m.

Tilt scheme was evolved after a meeting of industrialists, called by the Mayor, Clir. George Collier. He appealed to them to help avoid congestion at peak hours and reduce the risk of road accidents.
