AN A-licence variation, which allowed the use of a bulk transporter for

poultry food, was disputed before the Transport Tribunal in London last week. The grant had been made to C. W. Godden, Ltd., Mayfield, Sussex. by the South Eastern Licensing Authority, and was opposed by _Hill and Sons (BotIcy and Denmead), Ltd., Curdridge, Southampton.

The application, which sought the substitution of the transporter for another licensed vehicle, was made without indication of the nature of the normal user, said Mr. C. R. Beddington, for Hill. Other vehicles had been delivering the same feedingstuffs. to the same points before the special vehicle had been put on the road, he said.

There had been a substantial increase in the number of broiler houses in the district and there was no doubt that their fleet of 14 vehicles was fully employed, said Mr. D. L. McDonnell, for Godden. Announcing the refusal of the appeal, Mr. M. L. C. Macaskie, Q.C., said that the Tribunal were impressed by the rapid growth of the broiler-house industry.

60 M.P.H. ON X TYRES AT NORMAL PRESSURES THE Michelin Tyre Co., Ltd., state that 1 the load ratings and pressures normally recommended for their X steel-cord giant tyres fitted to rigid and articulated goods vehicles are applicable for operation at sustained speeds of up to 60 m.p.h. Tyre sizes covered by the new recommendation are 7.50and 9.00-16 in., 6.50-, 7.00-, 7.50-, 8.25-, 9.00and 10.00-20 in., D.20 and E.20.

Michelin have already approved the normal load ratings for X tyres fitted to coaches for sustained speeds of 65 m.p.h. With modified load ratings, giant X covers ranging from 7.50-20-in. to E.20 (11.00-20-in.) are suitable for constant speeds of up to 75 m.p.h. Pressures are unaltered but the carrying capacity drops by 5 cwt. for an 8.25-20-in. tyre and by 6" cwt. for a 9.00-20-in., other reductions being in similar proportion.

The 10.00-20-in. X tyre has been adopted by Guy Motors, Ltd., as standard equipment for their Warrior 14-ton-gross four-wheeled goods chassis. All Guy goods chassis now have X tyres as standard original equipment.

LESS DELAY AT LIGHTS

FEWER traffic delays can be expected as the result of research by the Road Research Laboratory into traffic-light operation. Already some of the results —based on a study of new methods of signal time setting—are being used at busy road junctions, easing the flow of traffic at peak periods.

The research, carried out by Dr. F. V. Webster. a physicist at the Laboratory, has won for him the £500 Wolfe Award for 1959. Dr. Webster's work covered the general settings of signals and the use of signals on high-speed roads and roundabouts.
