Entries will be limited to about 80, but will not be restricted to operators in Stepney. Only one vehicle in any class will be accepted from any entrant, and no organization will be able to enter more than three vehicles in the competition. There will be an optional maintenance contest. The Traders' Road Transport Association have offered to organize an inspection of C-licence vehicles, and Stewart and Ardern, Ltd., have promised to test Aand B-licence vehicles.

MR. HOOD BARBS TO PAY . SURTAX ON £70,000

-THE Court of Appeal ruled last week I that Mr. Henry. Rupert Hood Barrs was liable to pay surtax on nearly £70,000. consisting of dividends on shares in Steel Barrel Scamrnells and Associated Engineers, Ltd. He lost an appeal against surtax assessments for the six years from 1941-42 to 1946-47.

Lord Evershed, giving judgment, said Mr. Hood Barrs had sought to reduce his surtax liability on dividends averaging about £11,000 a year by transferring shares to his daughters, Mr. Hood Barrs had not shown that he had parted with the beneficial interest in the shares, and was no longer liable for the tax on. the

income.

Leave to appeal to the House of Lords was refused.

REES JEFFREYS STUDENTSHIP

APPLICATIONS are invited for theRees Jeffreys Studentship, tenable at the London School of Economics, to enable a suitable candidate to devote at least one year to full-time research into the economics of transport.

The studentship. which is open to any person who has been engaged in the administration of transport, will have an annual value of £500. Applications must be made to the Registrar, London School of Economics and Political Science, Houghton Street, London, W.C.2, before June 30.

DEVELOPING COIL SPRINGS

.1-1 A NEW development building for the

Coil Spring Federation Research Organization was declared open in Sheffield last Tuesday by Sir Harry Melville, secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.

The D.S.I.R. had given financial assistance to the Federation, and Sir Harry thought that with the new equipment now available it should be possible to develop cheaper coil springs with longer working lives. These would be competitive with rubber or pneumatic suspension media.
