Acts of bravery by haulage drivers have been in the news several times lately. On Wednesday this week another such act was recognized, at a function where the courageous driver met the man he saved, for the first time since the accident. Bulk hauliers James Hemphill of Glasgow, and Forth Chemicals Ltd. gave a lunch to honour Jack Marsh, aged 49, who works for William Rainford and lives in Skelmersdale, Lanes; he was also given a gold watch.
The man he saved was Jimmy Gilda, whose tanker overturned after swerving to avoid another vehicle on A6 on July 22, the 20-ton load of flammable chemicals catching fire at once. Jack Marsh was repairing a tyre on his lorry nearby, and he plunged into the blazing cab and dragged the driver clear.
Since then, Jimmy Gilda has been in hospital with spine and rib fractures.
