THE International Freight Container and Container Handling Exhibition which opens at Earls Court on Monday and closes on Friday. September 26. has been planned to play a major role in promoting and encouraging throughout the world the growing use of containers and the most up-to-date container handling techniques.

SMMT and Iliffe Exhibitions Ltd. have organized the exhibition which is sponsored by our associated journals, Freight Management and Mechanical Handling.

Over 85 major manufacturers and suppliers of container equipment and ancillary services will be represented.

Services

OCL and ACT, the two consortia operating the UK/Australia container services, will provide information on the facilities they offer to exporters and importers, details of their ships, existing and planned services and advice on the use and packing of containers. French Railways will be the only other exhibitor featuring container or shipping services. In association with British Railways they offer shippers a complete transport service to markets in and beyond France.

Port authorities will be noticeable by their absence with one surprising exception. Jacksonville Port Authority, which operates airports and seaports in Florida on the south-east coast of the USA, is to exhibit models of its Talleyrand Docks and Terminals, the Blount Island Marine Terminal and Industrial Complex, and its International Airport.

Among the exhibitors of financial services besides Barclays and National Provincial Banks will be Bowmaker (Commercial) Ltd. and Mercantile Credit Co. Ltd., which both offer hire, leasing and hire purchase facilities, and Carl Tiedemann offering "Rent it hereā€”drop it there" round-trip or long-term container leasing facilities. Lloyd's Register of Shipping is to display models of an imaginary port and industrial centre, and a one-eighth scale model of a tank container in a test rig.

The London Telecommunications Region of the GPO will have a complete telecommunications centre set up on its stand with demonstrations of telex services. Cummins Engine Co. Ltd. will be stressing how Cummins power is available for vehicles hauling maximum length and weight containers. Cummins will also feature its European service network.

The only exhibitor concerned solely with container repair facilities will be Repcon Ltd., a specialist in the repair of containers and skeletal trailers. Repcon will display photographs of repair work being carried out and maps showing where repair facilities are available within the UK and throughout the world, it will share a stand with its associated company Coubro and Scutton (M and I) Ltd.

Containers

Approximately two dozen container manufacturers will exhibit and almost half of these will also show conventional and skeletal semi-trailers. Two manufacturers. AIR (Air Conditioning and Refrigeration) Ltd. and Bonallack and Sons Ltd., are to exhibit refrigerated containers and Gregson and Co. Ltd. insulated and other types. Tank containers will be seen on W. P. Butterfield (Engineers) Ltd. and Universal Bulk Handling Equipment Ltd. stands.

The only foreign container exhibit will be a display of various 20ft models including stainless steel tank types by the Hungarian Shipyards and Crane Factory. Among the general dry-cargo freight containers on show will be a revolutionary all-steel model by the Owen Organisation, a new glassreinforced plastics container by York Trailer Co. Ltd. which will also exhibit a container transfer system and skeletal trailers in addition to its standard range of container models. Marshalls (Engineering) Ltd., of Cambridge, will show 20ft and 40ft models, the 20ft unit based on the design which had the distinction of being the first container to be awarded Lloyd's "Type Approval".

Steel and light-alloy 20ft, 30ft and 40ft models will be exhibited by Cravens Homalboy (Sheffield) Ltd. and in the outside exhibition park the firm will have two Stick 20ft coupling containers mounted on matching chassis with sliding air-suspension coupling axles.

Containers with extra wide door openings and one with a removable roof will be displayed by the Duramin Engineering Co. Ltd.

British Railways Workshops will have 20ft, 30ft and 40ft containers on display, some of which have full side openings, also one with a tilt top and another with a glass-reinforced plastics top. BR Workshops will also feature container repair and maintenance contract services.

Small containers designed to fit into standard ISO containers will be displayed by Geetainers "S" International.

Refrigeration equipment for containers will be shown by British Oxygen Co. Ltd. which is featuring its Polarstream liquid nitrogen system, and by Petters Ltd. which is displaying its new PS 200 unit for the first time. J. and E. Hall Ltd. will have various types of equipment on show including a self-contained clip-on unit, the Isoclip. Air-cooled diesel alternator sets which supply power for refrigeration units will be exhibited by Klockner-Humboldt-Deutz AG of West Germany.

The Bloxwich Lock and Stamping Co. Ltd., and J. N. Blair Ltd. will exhibit container hardware; J. H. Mudford and Sons Ltd., and Winterbottom Products, both manufacturers of canvas, PVC and plastics covers and tilts, will also have stands.

Materials used in container construction will be featured by the Thames Plywood Manufacturers Ltd. The Steel Sheet Information and Development Association, Alcan Industries Ltd., and International Nickel Ltd. will feature the use of stainless steel, and Alexander Marcar and Co. Ltd. will display special steel sections on behalf of its principal, Schwerter Profileisenwalkzwerk AG.

Trailers A wide range of platform and skeletal trailers will be exhibited by many of the well-known manufacturers including York, Crane Freuhauf Trailers Ltd. and its associate Boden Trailers Ltd., John Thompson (Transport Division) Ltd., Pitt Trailers Ltd., Taskers Trailers Ltd., Highway Trailers (GB) Ltd., HWP Engineering Co. Ltd., Primrose Third Axle Co. Ltd., Peak Trailers Ltd., Northern Trailer Co. Ltd., and Cravens Hornalloy.

Handling equipment Container handling equipment will be exhibited by a number of manufacturers in various forms, including at least six demountable or swop-body systems. York will have a new air-operated system, and Peterborough Engineering Co. Ltd. will display its Pengco Load-O-Matic models. A. C. Penman Ltd. recently introduced a new hydraulic system, which will be shown. Abelson Motors Ltd. will be demonstrating its Abelmatic `swop-body unit in the demonstration area on a new Ford DT 1700 chassis, and Davies Magnet Works Ltd. and Cockers of Southport will also have units on show.

A container lifting system of another type, the Goldhofer Swinglift, will be featured on Alexander Marcar's stand. These are German-built units designed for fitting to vehicle chassis, which by means of hydraulics and stabilizer legs enable a driver to load, unload or transfer containers to other vehicles or rail wagons with no assistance. This will be the first exhibition appearance of the equipment in the UK.

Conveyancer Fork Trucks Ltd. will be showing a working model of the Owen Karricon straddle carrier in addition to demonstrations of container loading with its completely new Starline E3R2 fork-lift truck. Also showing fork trucks will be Coventry Climax Engines Ltd. with two models, the 50-EC and the 25-EC, Lansing Bagnall Ltd. which will display a range of counterbalance, reach, pallet and stillage trucks, and Hestair Sherpa Ltd. which is to unveil two new trucks of 14--. and 2-ton capacities, and the latest addition to its range of lightweight models.

A trolley-gantry for moving containers will be exhibited by Rollalong Ltd. This is a unit with self-contained hydraulics and a 15 hp power unit.

Coubro and Scrutton will have a 20ft container top-lifting frame on display in addition to many items of lashing equipment.

Cargo control equipment will be featured by B. Dixon-Bate Ltd. which is showing its Shorfast range and the King Aircraft Division of H. K. Porter Co. (GB) Ltd., which will exhibit a comprehensive range of tracking, track fittings, strap and buckle assemblies.

Joloda Transport Equipment Ltd. will have a 30ft container fitted with the Joloda system and will be demonstrating its latest hydraulic system with removable tracks.

A mobile container loading ramp in model form will be exhibited by P. C. and C. K. Chase Ltd., which will also display pallet cages, collapsible pallets and the Convertorack flexible storage system.

The exhibition will be open from 9.30 a.m. till 6 p.m. daily.
