• Two vehicles were suspended from the A licence of E. R. Ballard and Son Ltd., Birmingham, at a S.177 /178 inquiry in Birmingham on Wednesday—one vehicle for one month and the other for three months. In addition, another vehicle was removed with the condition that a replacement vehicle would be allowed.

The West Midlands LA, Mr. J. Else, said that in 1967 one immediate and two delayed prohibitions had been issued. Between then and April 22, 1969, there had been another four immediate and five delayed.

Mr. G. Sharpe, vehicle examiner, said he had carried out a fleet inspection at Ballard during May and June 1969. There was no undercover working area, no pit and the surface of the maintenance area was unsuitable. There were, however, adequate tools.

Ballard's premises had been re-visited in September 1969. Mr. Sharpe said the only change was that a de-greasing machine had been acquired.

Mr. E. R. Ballard, managing director of Ballard, said he had arranged to let T. Baumber, a garage proprietor, undertake the maintenance. Baumber would carry out a complete vehicle check each 5,000 miles or six weeks, hydraulic jacks being used to raise the vehicle. Maintenance record forms had been ordered.
