• Stringent economies had helped Newcastle City Transport to achieve a £58,492 operating surplus in a year when there had been fears of a substantial loss, the undertaking's manager, Mr. James Hurst, reported last week. He told the transport committee that the surplus would be used for bus replacements and on improvements to the undertaking's Byker works.
