OCL re-orders from Crane

A FURTHER ORDER from Overseas Containers Ltd. has been obtained by Crane Fruehauf Trailers Ltd. This order, for 1,280 standard 20ft dry-freight containers, brings the total quantity of this type purchased and ordered by OCL from Crane Fruehauf to more than 7,750 units. The initial contract.for 5,000. placed in late 1967, was completed on time.

In addition OCL has also ordered 250 40ft x 8ft Sin units—the first 40ft models to be ordered by OCL for its through transport container service.

The total quantity of Crane Fruehauf containers purchased and ordered by OCL is now more than 8,000 units, including 20f1 and 40ft dry-freight containers and a number of 4,200-gal gross bulk liquid tank containers.

New Tilt-tainer model

NEW MODELS from the Crane Fruehauf range of Tilt-tainers have been supplied to Panalpina International Transport Ltd. of London, which has purchased eight 20ft and two 30ft units. These open frame/tilt-covered containers are the first Crane Fruehauf Tilt-tainer models to be fitted with door-end loading facilities.

The Tilt-tainer is designed to facilitate loading of large, bulky cargoes, such as machinery, via the completely removable roof and sides. The additional door end-loading facility now offered increases the versatility of this model by allowing normal "closed" container access.

Standard double doors of lin. thick ply metal are fitted, and these are secured by double locking gear. Deep sea reinforcement and patented Anti-Rax catches are also fitted to ensure that the doors remain closed pnder even the most arduous -deep sea" condrtions.

Sides consist of 2ft 6in. high corrugated steel folding sides, with intermediate box section stanchions and roof rail stringer. Side closures above the drop sides is completed by removable extruded box section body boards, and the open top style roof structure is fitted with detachable roof bows at 3ft centres.

Load protection is provided by a one-piece nylon/pvc tilt, to full TIR requirements, which covers the sides to 15in. below the upper edge of the drop boards.

Step-up in North Sea traffic

TO COPE with the growth in traffic across the North Sea, the United Steamship Co. Ltd. of Copenhagen (DFDS) has placed in service between Grimsby and Esbjerg a new rollon /roll-off container vessel, ms Surrey (3,200 tons deadweight).

It made its first trip from Grimsby on September 4. Stabilized, and with a speed of 18 knots, it will maintain a twice-weekly service across the North Sea. In the UK direction it will be used primarily for the transport of trailerized bacon and containerized butter.

There are four decks with a total capacity of up to 215 20ft ISO containers. The width of each deck is sufficient to enable up, to six containers or semi-trailers to be carried side by side. The bottom deck is served by a 30-ton capacity lift 39ft 4in. long by 9ft 10in. wide. The next two decks have roll-on /roll-off facilities via the stern port. The top container deck is equipped with its own self-contained lift-on /-off equipment.

Existing roll-on /-off vessels are being altered to step up their`container /trailer capacity. These alterations include the provision of upper container decks on the Stafford and Somerset and the lengthening of the Suffolk and Sussex.

The end product of these large-scale developments will be that six fast modern rollon /-off ships will replace a considerably greater number of conventional vessels and maintain 12 sailings a week between the UK and Denmark. They will provide a capacity of over 150,000 20ft trailers or containers a year.

At Esbjerg DFDS has its own comprehensive container and unit load terminal which has recently been extended. The facilities now include a second ramp, a new warehouse of 23,680 sq. ft., a container/trailer parking area of 172,000 sq. ft. and additional mechanical handling equipment. Between Esbjerg and Copenhagen and vice versa DFDS has overnight express container trains in operation. These trains are made up of the latest Danish State Railways bogie wagons which will each take up to three 20ft containers or flats.
