PARDONS FOR SIX DRIVERS

SIX people who were convicted of exceeding 30 m.p.h. in utility vehicles have been recommended for free pardons by Sir David Maxwell Fyfe, Home Secretary. In the cases concerned, the circumstances are similar to those existing in the case of Blenkin v. Bell.

The High Court decided in that action that when a vehicle which could be used for carrying passengers or goods and had a carrier's licence, was not in fact transporting goods, the conditions of the carrier's licence, including the observance of the 30 m.p.h. speed limit, did not apply.

550-MILE RUN WITH WOOL

THE first large-scale movement of wool by road in Australia was completed recently when three Leyland Comet articulated vehicles and a Leyland Hippo lorry arrived in Fremantle, after covering 550 miles from Leonora, in the North Coolgardie goldfields, in 24 hours travelling time. They delivered over 300 bales.

The journey was undertaken because rail services were not available through a strike in the metal trade. It demonstrated the value of road transport in the out-back country, already substantiated by the haulage of live cattle in Queensland.
