Somewhere beneath its superbly styled GRP exterior is a Mercedes 1748 complete with retarder, cruise control, particle-filtered exhaust, and electronic tyre pressure system. Its spec also includes a cellular phone, fax, computer and printer, range warning system, Bosch Travel pilot and full microwave catering with auto coffee maker.

Cab doors slide rearwards pneumatically and rear views down the sides are provided by video cameras.

OUTER PANELLING

'Caravan manufacturer, Neismann built the lavishly-finished, air-conditioned conference/hospitality unit on an airsuspended single-axled Spiers lightweight chassis. Like the cab, it has GRP outer panelling, with a velour-lined, carpeted interior.

Lohr exhibited its latest demountable nine (4.5m) car transporter, designed for the French and West German markets. The drawbar outfit's 6.1m front section connects to a long-wheelbase tractive unit via its fifth wheel, mounted close behind the cab.

A centering piece behind the tractor chassis ensures that it locates securely into the front section's tail frame.

The 17-tonne, 12.7m trailer couples under its tail using a standard Lohr spherical connector, bringing the combination within the 18m limit. Its tandem centre axles use air suspension and 215/75R 17.5 tyres. Supporting legs are fitted at the front and on the trailer neck.

Alusuisse's design of composite aluminium fibre glass gas cylinders, used previously for natural-gas-driven vehicles in Canada, has been taken a stage further and used in its all-aluminium Super Vol tube semi.

Manufactured in Henin-Beaumont by Alusuisse's French branch, Benalu, the tri-axled artic trailer carries two ISO swap containers, each holding 44, 6.0n composite cylinders. Compared with conventional steel tube trailers, the Su Vol can carry 75% more gas and, beim demountable, allows the operator mor flexibility when supplying customers.

Alusuisse (which reports that 95% a the aluminium used today in vehicle manufacturer is recycled) had a range its products on display, including body flooring and its insulated Alucopan composite panelling. This has a unit weight of 1,400kg/m3 and is available i 5,980 x 2 ,180 x 20mm sections.

Schmitz used the Frankfurt show to announce the opening of its Bulgarian factory and to launch longer chassisles reefer and platform tilt trailers for the 16.5m artic outfit limits.

The 13.46m-long reefer's 13.18m in floor has a ribbed aluminium platform that is said to be noise absorbant and useful for night-time loading in sensiti urban areas.

Schmitz also had a new centre-ax lec drawbar trailer for carrying 7.15 or 7.1 demountable containers.

Kassbohrer, which is currently supplying cement tankers to its UK tanker agent Len Shields of Erith, an Cheshire haulier Bolshaw, had its 'squared off' tanker on display at Frankfurt.
