• An inquest was opened at Wakefield's coroner's court last Friday into the death ofJacksons Transport employee James Hodgson, who died after cleaning out a chemical tanker operated by the Ossett-based company.
Hodgson, 21, is believed to have been using steam cleaning equipment to release a valve congealed by residue from a consignment of parachloro-orthocresol. The substance is a phenol compound used in the manufacture of fertilisers and general pesticides. The Health and Safety Executive is carrying out an investigation into the incident, which happened on 9 May.
HSE says it will be examining the tanker and safety procedures employed by the company. These are standard procedures in the event of a serious industrial accident.
Several other employees and members of the emergency services including firemen and ambulancemen also required medical treatment after the accident.
