Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Masterhaul, the road/rail operation owned jointly by Freightliner and Russell Davies, has extended its UK haulage agreement with international shipper Senator Lillie in a seven-figure deal.

Felixstowe-based Russell Davies is dedicating 30 vehicles to the 12-month contract — 15 in the new Senator livery. Up to 20 are Volvo FL10s; the rest ERF ElOs. It will handle short-haul deliveries, while British Rail-owned Freightliner will transport much of the longer-haul goods by train.

Road hauliers and rail are traditionally seen as competitors, but the joint venture shows they can work together, says Masterhaul: "The supposed conflicts of interest need not be a barrier to providing intermodal transport systems."

Masterhaul, formed in 1985, provides an in-house transport department in the office of Senator's UK agent Anglo European. The four companies in the contract have already unveiled the first vehicle with the new Senator livery.

As well as operating container haulage, Masterhaul offers devanning and distribution, empty container repositioning and storage using the back-up facilities of its parent companies. Senator is based in Bremen in West Germany but operates worldwide.
