As a result the industry would be nearing 1980 before fleets Were fully replaced with 36-ft. vehicles and " before we cease to pay for the Overcautious policies of the 1950s." Mr. A. F. R. Carling, chairman of the Public Transport Association, said this when addressing the annual general meeting during the P.T.A. conference in Eastbourne on Wednesday. A report of the conference is on pages 548-550.

Mr. Carling went on to say that the industry would not remain unchanged. He hoped it would not suffer from lack of the necessary imagination within, or rigidity of legislation without. " May we look for a quicker and more imaginative reaction when changes are necessary," he said.

Mr. Carling said he had great confidence in the future of the industry, because ot the cost-efficiency of buses, because of their unique contribution to public safety and because of their highly efficient use of road space.

The following were elected to the national council: Messrs. R. W. Birch, R. J. Ellery, F. W. Hodgkinson. R. G. James, H. Orme White, S. J. B. Skyrme, F. J. Speight, J. C. Franklin, C. T Humpidge and W. Robinson.
