nOUBT that Glasgow Corporation's Li proposal to buy l00 buses at a total cost of £350,000 to provide facilities for the Castlernilk housing estate would be an economic proposition, was expressed by the Scottish Licensing Authority, Mr. W. F. Quin, at the annual dinner of the Industrial Transport Association (Scottish Branch), in Glasgow, last week. He also said that the buses would add to the city's traffic problem at peak periods.
Mr. Quin suggested the withdrawal of trams from within a radius of a square mile of the city centre, and the limitation of parking to only one side of streets, as means for solving the traffic problem.
WHY COMMITTEE'S STATEMENTS WERE REJECTED T HE Minister of Transport last week gave Mr. Ernest Davies reasons why representations by the Central Transport Consultative Committee on the number of persons to be allowed to stand in public service vehicles were not accepted.
The Minister stated that the question of the standing passengers was of general application, whereas the main terms of reference of the committee concerned the services or facilities provided by the British Transport Commission.
He had, however, told the chairman of The committee that. leaving aside questions of legal interpretation, he would be glad to consult the committee on such matters in future. On reflection he thought he could .well have done so on this occasion. It was his intention to include the committee among the bodies he would consult when he received a scheme from the B.T.C. regarding reorganization under the Transport Act, 1953.
