• Irish hauliers are calling for the introduction of an infrastructure levy to replace road tolls in Ireland.
The move comes as a new east coast toll road is being built in the country, joining an increasing number of toll bridges. The Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA) believes the move—which would take the form of a 2% levy on profits from all companies—would help avoid delays which are plaguing the National Development Plan, and would mean all companies contributed towards road improvements. Jimmy Quinn, IRHA spokesman, says any delay in completing road infrastructure would have a negative effect on companies, foreign or Irishowned, operating in Ireland.
"Given the serious nature of government finances and the need to keep road development or track, we are proposing to government that a 2% levy on company profits is introduced," he says.
The 2% levy would raise over €660m (1,465m) per year, says the IRHA, which is to meet with officials in Ireland's Department of Finance this week.
