Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• by Colin Barnett DaimlerChrysler's Brazilian off-shoot has launched a new range of Mercedes-Benz lightweight trucks which may provide a clue to the company's wider plans.

The Accelo takes the fight for lightweights directly to the far-Eastern manufacturers who currently dominate this sector globally. As well as selling In its home market, where MB Is already a major force, the Accelo will initially be exported to Argentina, Chile and Colombia, with the Middle East and North and West Africa likely to follow.

But being such an obvious competitor to the higher end of the Mitsubishi Ceder range—also part of the DaimlerChrysler portfolio—ft will be interesting to see whether the new product has a future in the European market place. Bear In mind the increased globalisation within DaimlerChrysler that led to the Axor fleet tractor, much of whose content has a Brazilian heritage.

The Accelo comes in two versions, the 715C and 915C, rated at 7,000 and 9.000kg GM respectively. Both are available with 3,700mm wheelbases, but the lighter version also comes at 3.100mm, allowing it to comply with the 5,550mm long and 2,200mm wide dimension limitations of an 'urban cargo vehicle', the only vehicles permitted to operate in central Sao Paulo.

Both versions have outputs of around 150hp but from completely different elec tronically-controlled, four-valve-per cylinder turbo-diesel engines.

The 715C has a 2.7-litre five-cylinder unit developing 154hp and 330Nm, coupled to the five-speed MB 033-5 as fitted to various European models, including the Sprinter 616. The larger 915C has a 4.2litre four-cylinder which at 150hp actually has less power than the 715C, but it compensates with 580Nm of torque. The gearbox used is the five-speed Eaton FS0 4405.
