Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The UK commercial vehicle market has a new contender with the launch of the Proton Jumbuck. Built in Malaysia for the domestic and Australian markets, Proton hopes to exploit the UK's currently uncontested haff-tonne capacity pickup category.

Competitively-priced at £5,995 (ex-VAT) for the base GL model, the Jumbuck comes with a threeyear/60,000-mile warranty, and three years' free roadside assistance. The GLS trim level adds cloth seats, CD player and alloy wheels for .E6,895. Maximum gross payload is 635kg, with a load volume of over 800 litres.

Based on the Wire saloon car, the Jumbuck is powered by a 1,5-litre fourcylinder, 12-valve petrol engine developing 86hp and 124Nrn of torque. Power is delivered through a five

speed manual gearbox to the front wheels, its appeal for the UK commercial market may be limited by the lack of a diesel version, although an LPG version is currently being evaluated.

Proton is keen to emphasise that Lotus Engineering, which it owns, conducted the entire product engineering and testing of the vehicle, including the integration of the passenger car monocoque chassis with the load area.

Initial driving impressions are positive, with a nicely damped chassis and well-planted, solid feel. Steering is positive and cornering neutral, though the gear-change has a decidedly vague feel.

Proton estimates 1,200 vehicles will be sold in the first year through its UK network of 85 dealers.
