as Official Pronouncements ROAD CHECK ON CHARTERED VEHICLES.—The Ministry has put into force, on a small scale, a scheme for a roadside checir on the use of chartered vehicles. Drivers of such vehicles (whether controlled by the General Section or the Meat Section) are likely to be required to produce to an inspector the current vehicle records and consignment notes. They should note that the inspector has. authority to examine also the actual load and theidentificaticin disc. An inspector will carry a document to establish his identity and besides the duties mentioned he will be ready to advise and assist drivers of chb.rtered vehicles in difficulties. Although, in certain circumstances, it may be necessary to halt a moving vehicle, as a general rule vehicles will not he stopped for the purpose of inspection. HAULIERS' NATIONAL TRAFFIC POOL. —Registrations with the Pool now total nearly 3,7r0.

CARGOES MOVED.—The total traffic in the week ended May 29 was 140,000 tons (livestock excluded).

DEFENCE LINES.—The number of vehicles enrolled last week was 308—a disappointing figure, which shows a decrease of nearly 50 per cent, on the previous week. The total now stands at 34,438.

IDENTITY CARDS.—It has been ascertained that the identity card, NR 107, to which reference was made in these notes recently, is at present available• only to employees of public-utility undertakings. Drivers of chartered vehicles or of vehicles belonging to operators registered with the Pool, who do not hold one of the special green

identity •cards, should be advised therefore to apply for the green card, on the appropriate form, to the Local National Registration Officer.

COUNTY SCRAP AGENTS.—In addition to the agents already announced for the supply and control of vehicles in the Newcastle-on-Tyne area the following have been appointed:—
