OWING to a remarkable increase in traffic, Messrs. W. E. Evenly, haulage contractors, of Frome, were granted an additional three vehicles: (14 tons 7 cwt.) under an A licence, by the Western Licensing Authority, at Bristol, last week. The G.W. Railway. Co. was the only objector.

Mr, T. D. Corpe, for the applicants, said that they held an A licence for 23 vehicles• and seven trailers (123 tons). In 1935, they carried with their own vehicles 83,196 tons and, in 1936, 109,519 tons, This traffic consisted of 70 per cent, hot tarmac, 25 per cent.

general road-making and building materials and 5 per cent, mixed goods.

He submitted that the mixed goods constituted the only traffic carried in direct competition with the railway company and represented 400 tons of the increase. With this submission the Licensing Authority agreed.

In 1934, £360, 1935, £622, and in 1936, £2,754, were paid to sub-contractors. Mr. Everny said that it was impossible to hire satisfactorily, as most of the local operators had B licences and he had to hire from distances, incurring payment for dead mileage.
