B"AUSE of frustrating delays in loading and unloading at customers' premises and at the docks, Arthur Wood and Co. (Transport) Ltd., of Salford, has decided as company policy to change over from rigid vehicles to articulated units with at least two trailers to each tractive unit_ The first of these outfits, an Atkinson with York trailers, is now in operation and a further two tractive units with four trailers are expected to be in use before the end of this month.
Some 2,000 tons of general freight are moved each week through the Wood group of companies, which operates extensively in road transport, warehousing, shipping and forwarding. The singlestorey warehouse of the company in Manchester has a capacity of 2,500 tons and extensive mechanical handling has been adopted in order to ensure spec, turn-round.
Palletization is encouraged but f the benefit of manufacturers not 5 geared to this system the recent additi4 of an electric mobile conveyor h solved the problems of high stacking al manhandling.
