The fruits of a discussion between Dick Farmer, chairman of the Atlas Express Group, Jack Brown, chairman of Atlas Express Ltd, and myself in Dunstable last July ripened last month. Dick and Jack were conscious that with more than 2,000 employees — a number that surprised me — communication within the group upwards, downwards and sideways, needed more careful thought and a professional hand.

They thought that a staff newspaper was the answer and they sought my advice, I fully agreed and recommended Eric Gibbins, owner of Transport and Distribution Press, as an eminently suitable editor and publisher.

His first issue of The Atlas Express appeared in December. It is a vigorous, expertly produced two-colour four-page tabloid with a highly effective front page. If every issue is as bright as the first, The Atlas Express will quickly attract a keen following outside as well as inside the group_
