William Rodgers, Secretary of State for Transport, appealed for the motoring public not to makeunecessary journeys into London and other city centres during this week's rail strikes.

He asked people to walk or cycle to work wherever possible, or to share cars. Extra car parking spaces were made available although meter charges were not lifted.

Traffic in London on Tuesday, the first day of the natio nal rail strike, was significantly worse. Many Out-of-town coaches were evident, hired by banks and other companies whose employees had to get to work at all costs.
