Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Roadworks on the 1/15/11/ 6 link and pothole repairs on the M6 are set to boost profits for the V6 Toll operators. Guy Sheppard reports.

OPERATORS COULD be forced onto the £10-a-trip M6 Toll road following the start of a twoyear £6.5m repair programme on one of Britain's busiest motorway junctions.

The repairs, between junction 1 of the M5 at West Bromwich and the M6 link road, are bound to boost congestion as they will run from 7am-7pm weekdays and 8am-lpm on Saturdays.

The West Midland motorway network will also be disrupted on the northbound side of the M6 between 35-6 and southbound around J8.

Robin Jackson, route sponsor for the Highways Agency, says 50mph speed limits will be imposed and the hard shoulder in both directions will be closed.-This is a major project which involves the ongoing repair and maintenance to a number of structures supporting the M5 at the Wigmore Viaduct," he explains.

Completion is scheduled for February 2006.

The project is likely to boost demand for the M6 Toil motorway which suffered a fall in traffic volumes last month (CM 12 February), particularly as the M6 will also be disrupted by 17.5m worth of pothole repairs from June.

But John Howells, area manager for the Road Haulage Association, predicts the £10 charge for trucks will continue to deter most operators from using the M6 Toll: "They will stick with the M6 or use alternative routes such as the A500, the A50 and the A5 whereas car drivers will see the £2 toll as a viable alternative."
