Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Miles Brignall • Skelmersdale-based Ken Abram has called in administrators after recent expansion was followed by financial problems. The company, which employs around 120 drivers and has a turnover of around <£12m a year, has called in Manchester administrators Leonard Curtis.

The family-run firm led by Kenneth Abram was set up in 1966 and specialises in domestic contract haulage, warehousing and groupage work.

Administrator Dermot Power says the company continues to trade normally although it is too soon to say if there will be any job losses. "Our aim is to run the company to a stage where it can stand on its own two feet," he explains. "We have had a number of approaches to buy the firm, but it is not our present intention to sell it; if it later transpires that would be in the best interest of all concerned, then we will then look at that option."

He confirms that the company, which also has a Warrington depot, has recently taken on a number of new contracts "at very tight prices" which may have led to the financial difficulties.

Power says a number of sub-contractors are owed money; most of them worked via agencies. A creditors' meeting will be called in due course.

U The company reported a pre-tax profit of £32,000 in 1995 compared with £18,000 the previous year.
